2023 FREISA

Autumnal pine needles and resin, cherries, fresh cocoa powder and cranberries

Vineyard: Fox Hill Vineyard | Variety: 100% Freisa | Alcohol: 12.9% | Production: 21 cases

Freisa is an ancient grape rarely found outside of its home in Northern Italy and named for the berry’s fresh strawberry-like taste on the vine. As a wine, Freisa can be big and bold like its full-bodied kin, Nebbiolo. Our Freisa is a more reserved and fruit-forward representation that’s much lighter on its feet. A beautiful wine that’s ready to drink now, but can be aged.

Winemaking: We harvested the grapes in late September and destemmed them upon arrival at the winery to help reign in any excess tannins during fermentation. The destemmed fruit was punchdown twice daily for five days and then pressed into stainless steel tank to finish its primary fermentation. We aged the wine in a single neutral French oak barrel for nine months. Bottle aged for four months before release. CCOF certified organic fruit. A few small rows grow happily at Fox Hill Vineyard in Mendocino, owned by Broc Cellars, where exposed hillsides create a climate that echoes the grape’s Piedmontese homeland.

Pairings: Hearty bolognese, mushroom ragu, roasted duck, a candlelit evening or a thick cable knit sweater….anything cozy.
